With 1,633 meters of height, Arenal Volcano is the picture-perfect of a cone. The most active volcano in Costa Rica, Arenal Volcano is a must-see in any tourist itinerary. However, it's very hard to see an eruption on day, most of the times Arenal Volcano is covered by clouds, the most recommended time to visit Arenal Volcano is on dry season (December to April). On July 29th, 1968 Arenal Volcano woke up from it's long sleep by a earthquake.
The explosion wiped out the villages of Tabacon and Pueblo Nuevo, the closest towns to Arenal Volcano.
Arenal Volcano is well-know as one of the most active volcano in the world. Constant eruptions flows lava and rocks, on day you can see the smoke behind every little eruption. To see an eruption is quite difficult but most people tell that is an incredible experience see how lava fly to 100 meters from its crater. Most days arenal Volcano makes eruption several times in an hour, blowing sulfur dioxide and chloride gases beside little rocks and lava.
Many transportation options are available from downtown Alajuela as in San Jose. You also can find local travels from Juan Santamaria International Airport and from other local airports in San Jose, Puntarenas and Guanacaste.
