About Cahuita National Park
With the pupose of protect the costal flora and fauna, coral reefs and ecosystems, Cahuita National Park was created on September 7, 1970. Coconut groves, clear and quite coral reefs, white sand beaches are Cahuita's main attractions. Coconut trees and beach almond trees are in abundance in swamps of Cahuita's Point.
The only mature coral formation along the Caribbean coastline can be find in Cahuita, within 240 hectares, elkhorn, smooth brain, sea urchins and numerous species of fish are in this amazing coral reef. Also you can find other species as lobsters, sea cucumber, green turtle, four identified species of crab, white shrimp, and other crustaceans are very abundant in the coral reef of Cahuita National Park.
Special Considerations
The way which conects Puerto Vargas Ranger Station and Cahuita is well mainteined and marked throught the year. In the four miles of road to the park you can observe white-faced monkeys, webbed spiders and sloths, species very commo0n in this park. Cahuita offers many possibilities for those people who likes to snorkel and swim, rent a snorkel equipment and dare to experiment and to see the greatest sea gifts in the coral reef.
How to get Cahuita National Park
By Bus - One of the most popular beaches in south Limon is about 45 km to downtown Limon. For those who use public transportation there are two options; take the bus who drives you to the center of Limon and then other bus to Cahuita, or take the bus from San Jose direct to Cahuita. The travel time for both is almost the same, four hours or fours hours and a half, usually the bus services are better for those who travel San Jose-Cahuita direct.
By Car - The trip from San Jose to Cahuita is fairly direct. Take the recently improved #32 highway from San Jose to Limon passing through th Braulio Carrillo National Park, usually the trip to Limon take about two hours. Drive carefully since the road is always cloudy during the rain season, becoming this road in one of the dangerous roads on Costa Rica, the recommendation to make this trip is to do it at day. Once you get Limon turn right at the first major intersection, in the Texaco Gas Station. Then stay in this road for a while, follow the signs to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. The 27 miles road between Cahuita and Limon is quite poor, the recommendation is to drive slowly, the trip takes about 55 minutes. Then you'll find a huge sign of "Welcome to Cahuita Beach & Cahuita National Park" on the left side, usually takes about 6-7 minutes from that intersection to get the town of Cahuita.
