Constantly monitored, Irazú Volcano had its major eruption on 1963 with several small eruptions since then. Its inusual greenish yellow coloring in the crater has benn caused by rain disolving minerals in crater walls. The lake is constantly monitored for changes in temperature and chemistry due to Irazú's Volcano constant small eruptions.
Getting Irazú Volcano National Park
The easier way to get Irazú Volcano is taking the highway out of San Jose to Cartago. Once in Cartago follow the signs, ther is going to be an asphalt road throught the mountains to the ranger station of Irazú Volcano National Park.
Park Facilities and Hours
Within 3432 meters, Irazú Volcano is one of the highest volcanos in Costa Rica, is also with Arenal Volcano one of the most actives with frequent small eruptions since 1723. The park offer several facilities at the lake and at the crater area including a small coffee shop, bathrooms and tables. Irazú Volcano National Park is open to the public fom 8 to 16 all days of the year.
The park also counts with trails and camping areas available at Ricardo Jimenez Oreamuno Recreation Area. To the north you will find the Ruben Torres Forest Reserve, wildlife spotting can be find in this reserve. Also Irazú Volcano counts with a reforestation project to restore the area from eruptions in the past.
