Limon

Limon is land of pride for its inhabitants, where the day to day of its ports, their streets, their markets and their seats is lived under the heat of a tropical sun reflecting the spirit of its people, their efforts and their illusions.

Ever since Cristobal Columbus sighted its coast, in year 1,502, the historical events that have taken place in the province of limon, one of the regions have been numerous that present/display but own characteristics, identity and personality of Costa Rica.

Since of year 1872 the arrival of the first originating afro-Caribbean immigrants of the Antilles, contracted for the construction of the railway line takes place that would unite San jose with the Atlantic Coast impelling the national economy and transforming the village of Cariari into the city of Limon. With the arrival of the Antillean black an ethnic and cultural interchange with the native population began, maintaining its customs afro-British, marking a great cultural difference with the rest of the country.

Today Limon is a full harbor city of color and resistances that are pronounced in their language, architecture, gastronomy, and in its cultural expressions that fill of rate the city, like the Carnivals of October or the Day of the Black.

The shortest route to arrive Limón is the Braulio Carrillo highway, but the Turrialba route along the old highway may also be taken. The distance between limon and san jose is approximately 160 kilometers. Limón now has the facilities to receive cruise ships as well. The limon city is old quarter has the characteristics of a historical center and is currently under urban renovation with restoration of buildings and a pedestrian walkway from Parque Vargas to the market.
