Due to the multiple origins of its population, this zone is peculiar in Costa Rica, located between the Caribbean Sea and Central Mountains. The tourism and the nature are in constant harmony.
The biodiversity of puerto viejo attracts lovers of the nature of all parts of the world. The first attraction of the puerto viejo is the great variety of birds, 850 registered species, that include the quetzal, colibríes and toucans.
The tropical forests count with more than 1,400 classes of trees and favor the habitat of the diverse fauna of the country: four types of monkeys, armadillos, jaguars and tapires among others.
Puerto Viejo is further along down the coast from Cahuita in the Altnatic Zone of Costa Rica and makes a beautiful place to visit. There are several exclusive hotels and beaches along this area. Indigenous reservations are nearby with tours available.
The Puerto Viejo beach offers a very thick and voluminous wave. This wave in puerto viejo comes from deep water over a shallow reef that is called Salsa Barva. It is a right reef break known for it's size and power. The biggest waves in Costa Rica break here when there is a swell. The only way to paddle in and out is through a small channel in the reef, be sure and observe a local paddle out before you do. Salsa Barva in purto viejo is for experienced surfers only and promises lots of adrenaline.
How arriving to puerto viejo from San Jose in bus or car
First Go to the “Terminal of the Caribbean” in San jose, Take a direct bus to Puerto Viejo of Talamanca; schedule 6:00am, 10:00am, 13:30pm and 15:30pm.or in car follow the highway Limon. and when it arrives at Limon takes the highway that takes to Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Sixaola.
